Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
Most clubs charge between $8 and $10 per dancer per lesson.
Is it difficult to learn? It looks complicated.
It is fun and easy to learn. Just listen to the caller! You learn the core (basic) steps and practise, practise until you know them well. Then it’s on to a few new steps, which is why it’s important to attend regularly.
Do I need a partner?
No. We mix and mingle and will provide a partner.
Do I need experience?
No. The caller will teach you everything you need to know. We usually have ‘square angels’ who will give you a nudge if needed.
Are there exams or competitions?
No; we dance for the fun of it, and so will you!
Are there other modern square dance clubs that I can go to?
Yes. If you visit the website www.eoDance.ca (Eastern Ontario Dance.ca) and click on ‘clubs’, you will find a list of the clubs in the area, and more are being organized all the time.
What do I wear to dance?
Just wear comfortable clothing and soft-soled shoes that will not make black marks on the floor. Some of the men wear western-style shirts and jeans, some of the women wear skirts, with or without a crinoline (never mandatory), some just wear slacks and a shirt/blouse. We do ask that you bring your dance shoes in a shoe bag and put them on in the hall.
We travel; are we likely to be able to dance while we are away from home?
Modern square dancing is taught and called in English all over the world. Check eoDance.ca for links or search on-line for clubs wherever you plan to travel.
Can my wife and I dance together?
You can start off that way, but you will be changing partners throughout the dance; that is how it is called. That is why it is easy for us to provide partners
It sounds like fun, but only one night a week??
There are many ‘open dances’ that you are invited to attend after you get a few moves mastered! Modern Square Dancing becomes a new lifestyle — your family must make a reservation to visit, once you get the ‘modern square dance bug’!
What happens after I’ve completed the basics? What then?
Then you move up to the next level – Mainstream! Even more fun and more of a challenge! You are building a new skill set – not everyone knows how to do this!
Why should I join modern square dancing?
Because it is good for the body (low impact exercise), mind (learn the calls and recall them instantly as the caller calls), and the soul (socializing with like-minded folks who enjoy your company and are not afraid to say so!) Modern Square Dancing is a brand-new lifestyle, and it is truly invigorating.
